The Cess Pool of My MindNovember 18 Stupid Hacks I saw a headline today online that brought to mind a blog that I meant to do months ago and did not because I was finding myself distracted by life in general. So I am going to write it here and now.
Perez Hilton was in court for something according to this headline, for what I really do not know or care really. The point that I was thinking about from before was that during the Mrs America pagent he asked a loaded question to Mrs California about gay marrage. When Mrs C answered according to her religious belifes he went out on a pissy pants rant about how bad a person she is.
Give me a break.
First off, Parez Hilton is nothing more tehn a two bit blogger hack who just happened to get noticed and became one of those people who are famous for being famous. The fact that he is gay has no bearing on my opinion in this matter whatsoever. I do not care to be quiet honest. Your gay. Good for you. The question of gay marrage itself is pissing me off and tearfull interviews with idiots like Hilton make my own convictions the firmer.
Here is the solution, free of charge.
So you want to be married to someone of the same sex do you? Well how about this. You can be joined in a legal ceromony called a civil union. This would give you all the rights , duties and responsibilities of a so called regualar marrage, it just wouldn't be called marrage on the piece of paper you frame and put on your wall. If you want to say your married, go ahead. For all intents and purposes you are. This does two things. First off it solves teh initial problem that the gay and lesbian community was having when it came to survivors benifits. Partners were dieing off and the survivors were getting screwed by the insurence companies because there was no "marrage". This was wrong of course and needed fixing. A civil union that is recognized by the province state or country would solve that problem. It would also protect those churches that choose to define marrage as being between a man and a woman from being forced to marry a gay or lesbian couple. My biggest fear is that some radical gay rights group is going to go to the Supreme Court and force the Catholic church or the Anglican Church , or any church that objects, to marry them. Sound far fetched? Not in todays society.
So that was the real reason that Perez Hilton drives me nuts. Well that and the fact that I htink he is talentless but whatever, I dont get to make the decision that keeps him in the public eye.
I will be fair though, it would seem that this same contestent from the pagent made an ass of herself on TV the other night and that doesnt help her cause at all. Whatever. Who even cares about beauty pagents anymore anyway? Unless someone says something that is deemed politically incorrect. Then people seem to care.
Wonder if the whole thing was set up from the start.... Being Gleefull Alright so this might end up sounding like a commercial of sorts and maybe it is but it is something I believe in.
The best new show on TV right now is called Glee and it airs on Fox on Wensdays. Why do I think this? Well let me explain myself.
In recent years the TV landscape has been over run with reality TV. So much so that there have been fewer good quality shows being aired by any network. This trend towards reality TV is part of the reason that the world is being dumbed down. Instant wealth and fame can be yours if your willing to go on telivision and be an ass in front of the cameras. I think that the ultimate proof of this is the parents of the so called Balloon Boy who were trying to get their own reality show. In doing so they wasted valuable resources and time as rescue units and TV cameras chased the giant Jiffy Pop container. Being on the fire department here makes that hit a little closer to home. I know what it is like to be out on a wild goose chase. Very frustrating.
Perhaps with the conviction of the parents of Balloon Boys parents this will start to end. Something else that might help is the fact that some people are starting to get killed on these extreame reality shows. The show Wipe Out had a contestent die not that long ago and overseas versions of other shows have had fatalities as well.
So what does this have to do with Glee? Well Glee is very well written for one thing. I read one critic tear into iit because the characters were shallow and selfish and full of themselves who were getting into ridiculous situations that just do not happen. I guess that this guy is so old that he forgot high school. Kids in high school are capable of being the most shallow selfish individuals on teh planet who are capable of unimaginable crualty. They are also increadably loving and caring and give fully of themselves and make the world a better place. Adults are also guilty of these things as well. Hence the situations that some of teh adult characters find themselves in during an episode of Glee.
I guess another reason I enjoy Glee so much is because when I was in high school I was in drama class and did some extra stuff after school as well with it. We were the equal of the Glee club. A whole bunch of misfits who came together and did some amazing things. There were no Cherrios per say in my school, but there were the popular stuck up kids who did look down their noses at us. A couple of them ended up in drama class and I know for a fact that they enjoyed themselves and also had that hidden talent thatthey never thought they had.
In the first episode of Glee Rachel says " being a part of something special makes you special doesnt it?"
Yes it does.
Telivision needs more shows like this, that delve into the emotions that people really do feel. We need to believe once more in characters who make us look into our own lives and ask ourselves " can I do better , can I do more?"
Will Rachel from Glee ever rank up there with characters like Hawkeye from M*A*S*H or Sam from Quantum Leap? I dont know. There have been only a few episodes so far. One thing ti do know though is that this show has gone back to what TV should be about. Good characters written by good writters and brought to life by wonderfully talented actors and actresses.
Feel the Glee friends. November 17 Poor Sarah Palin So Sarah Palin wont go away.
~~sigh~~
Come on, you freaking LOST! Then on top of that you QUIT your regular job early.
Does she really matter anymore?
Anyways, the point of this particular blog is the recent cover of Newsweek that fetures Palin on the cover.
Palin is wearing some short shorts a pair of sneakers and is looking ( oh boy) kinda hot. The headline next to the picture is " What to do about Sarah " or somethign similer.
Whatever.
The problem coming out of this is that this photo is being called sexist by her supporters and that Newsweek should be ashamed. Unbelieveably, I sort of agree.
This particualr picture of Palin was originaly taken for a photo spread in Runners World. It is a good picture for that type of artical and is well done. However with the headline the magazine has given it is out of context and looks bad.
Newsweek should do the honourable thing and apoligize and disclipin the person responsible. Will it happen? Seriously doubt it. There really is very little accountabilty anymore. Taking The Time My mom called me a few days ago and told me that the lady who was the libraryian when I was in elementary school was in the hospital. Mom suggested to me that I should go see her and have a chat with her because it would probably cheer her up a bit.
Damn good idea I thought.
So a couple of days went by and mom asked me again if I had gone to see her. Nope. Been kinda busy but I would make the time to go before my meeting that night.
So that night I went in to see her and she was laying in her hospital bed somewhat frustrated by the fact that she was having a hard time getting around. This is a lady who was fairly active her whole life and she did not like being on her back.
" What can I do? " she asked with a chuckle with her slight German accent that never really went away despite being in Canada for a very long time. She was actually very happy that she was able to get up and go to the bathroom on her own with a walker because it was the start of being able to get around again.
So we sat and talked for a good 15 or 20 minutes. I told her how when I think of a library the first image I always get is of the one from elementary school with its walls and racks of books. Told her how I was glad she told me to quit reading the crap I was reading and pointed me to the Hardy Boys books and from there I went on to read dozens of other books out of there that were more my reading level.
I asked her if her ears had been burning a couple of weeks back because I was talking with a friend of mine about her and how she was really the best libraryian ever and how my friend was thinking about doing it as well and since they shared a birthday that it really only made sense that she do it.
She told me how she was really proud of her library and how she learned english in there and she said that being there was the happiest time of her life.
I told her about some stuff I had written and I was going to get it printed out in bigger letters so she could read it and she was really impressed that I had done that and was really looking forward to reading this stuff. ( was going to get he my M*A*S*H story and The Forgotten that I wrote on here).
I was really looking forward to giving those things to her and having her read them so I could get her feedback on them.
That was Thursday night.
She died Friday morning.
Lesson here folks is to take the time to go see someone in the hospital and talk to them for a bit. You never know. She looked fine when I left. In good spirits with a smile on her face.
You just never know. May 12 This Is The Speech
It is with great pleasure that I am here before you to congradulate the class of 2009 on behalf of the town of High Prairie, Mayor Rick Dumount and the rest of town council. When I was asked to make this speech I knew that I had to have this picture you see on screen here as part of it. Of course as I thought about it I realized that most of this class might not have any idea as to who Calvin and Hobbes are, so please bare with me a moment. The Calvin and Hobbes comic strip depicted the adventures of a six year old boy and his stuffed tiger Hobbes. Of course to Calvin, Hobbes was a living breathing tiger with whom he had many debates and adventures. To everyone else Hobbes was simply Calvin's stuffed tiger. No one else could see Hobbes as Calvin could, and as such missed out on a great deal. When the strip ended in 1995 the last thing Calvin says is " It's a magical world Hobbes ol' buddy.... Let's go exploring." With those words the two friends walked away through the snow to find those adventures. If we take this poster to be a look 20 years into the future it certainly looks like Calvin did find those adventures. Here we see him as a man who has passed down his most cherished possesion to his daughter. Here is the lesson in all of this. When we are children we see the world differently. We see endless possibilities and adventures. Nothing is impossible when we are kids. As we get older though we seem to see the world in a different light. Our stuffed tigers no longer talk or go on adventures with us. Calvin has obviously grown up, but has not lost sight of who he was. We all grow up at some point (I'm actually looking forward to it myself) and have to take on the responsibilities of an adult. What we don't have to do is lose our sense of wonder, our joy of discovery, our belief in ourselves or the ability to talk to our stuffed tigers. Don't put away your childish things. Your tigers , your posters , your keepsakes. Save them and treasure them and when it is time give them to YOUR children and tell them about these things and why they were important to you. These things symbolish who you are in the here and now. Never forget who you are. Tell your children about yourself, because trust me if YOU don't do it your parents certainly will and you don't want some exagerated story about you to be told to your children do you? Believe in yourself, believe in each other and encourage each other throughout life. Be a positive influence for the world to see. Again, congratulations to you all, thank you for having me here. It has been an honour to be allowed to address you today. May 09 Graduation Speeches Once more I was asked to give the graduation speech for the grad class this year. Once more I tried to come up with something original and unique. Have you ever listened to the speeches that the dignitaries give at these things? I seriously think that they have a file folder of speeches that they pull these things out of. If not that then the speeches have no life. They sound lame, probably because they ARE lame. Most are delivered in a flat monotone voice that tells me that these people would rather be anywhere else. Or that they really don't care about these kids, or have already prejudged them in life.
Maybe part of the problem is that these people have had no interaction with the kids really. Maybe they just don't care. Well I may not always know these kids, but I am always going to give a speech from the heart that is different from all the rest. In fact if I am honoured to again speak at next years grad I already have an idea or two about what I am going to say. Yes it will be different.... April 09 Twilight The Movie At first I refused to watch Twilight until I had the book read. Then Dawn would not let me watch it until she had the book read.
She finished it tonight and since we dont work tommorow I convinced her that we should watch it tonight. Was not really that hard.
So which was better?
The book of course, it always is. HOWEVER.... The people who played the main characters in the movie were all very close to how I had them pictured except for one.
I would recomend you read the book first though bcause it goes into WAY more depth and you will understand soem of the sub text in the movie better if you do.
So now off to bed and book three! |
